Spark A Conversation How to Spot a Team Player - Spark Hire
Spark A Conversation How to Spot a Team Player - Spark HireHere at Spark Hire, we want to help companies utilize the power of online video to find the best candidates. We get a lot of questions from readers about best practices for using online video in the hiring process. These posts will address those questions about how to find your next superstar employee.Question How can you tell if a candidate will be a team player in a video einstellungsgesprch? -Brad from Salt Lake City Thanks for your question, Brad Making koranvers you have team players on your staff is really important- especially if the position works very closely with other departments and managers. The best way to decipher whether your candidate is a team player or not is by the interview questions you choose to ask. In this case, behavioral based interview questions are the best. Interview questions in a behavioral interview force the candidate to explain their skills and how they used them in a work setting in the pas t. In the case of being a team player, you can ask the candidate interview questions such as, Tell me about a time you had to work with a group and found that you disagreed with a team member. How did you resolve the issue? You can also go with, Tell me about a time you had to work as a team in a work setting. Did you succeed or fail? Why?Interview questions like this have the candidate think about whether or not they are a team player and how they worked as one in the past. If their answer is great and its easy for them to respond, then you probably have a great team player on your hands. If they stumble to find the words to answer, you may want to think again.Another great way you can see if a candidate is a team player is to inquire about their preferred working style. Do they prefer to work alone or with a team? You can come right out with interview questions like that and get your answer right away. Do you work better alone, or with a team? Which do you prefer? Even if they are not a seasoned worker yet, they will certainly have a pretty good idea what kind of working style they have. This can also help you out with finding a good corporate culture fit. If you have already asked these interview questions in the video interview and want to be sure that your candidates are team players, then perhaps you should consider a group interview. With a group interview, you can bring in a handful of candidates to interview together. The candidates that are great team players will make it a point to interact with the other candidates to show you their teamwork skills. They will actively listen to other candidates answers and help them out if need be. This is another great and easy way to see if your top candidates are team players. So start asking these questions in the video interview and get some great team players on your staff.Do you have a question you need answered? Learn How to Select a Headhunter or Employment Agency
Learn How to Select a Headhunter or Employment AgencyLearn How to Select a Headhunter or Employment AgencyWhats a headhunter? Whats the difference between an employment agency and a headhunter or a search firm? The terms that describe the people and companies that earn a living helping job binnenseekers find jobs can be confusing. Before diving into when and how to use anemployment agencyor headhunter for your job search, first, you must know whos who and who does what in the world of employment recruiting. Employment Agency The traditional employment agency assists job seekers in finding work. Some firms charge the job seeker, so be sure to clarify, up front, if there is a fee. Others are paid by the employer. In fruchtwein cases, I would not recommend using an agency that charges the job seeker. Search Firm/Executive Search Firm Search firms can be industry specific (i.e. banking or retail) or skill specific (i.e. accounting or information technology). There are two main ty pes of agencies Contingency Employment Agency A contingency agency is paid when their candidate is hired by the employer. These types of firms are most often used for low and mid-level searches and they often send a large number ofresumesto the employer.Retained Search Firm A retained search firm has an exclusive relationship with the employer. Search firms are typically hired for senior-level searches, and for a specific period of time to find a candidate to fill a job. They are paid expenses, plus a percentage of the employees salary, regardless of whether the candidate is hired. Recruiter/Headhunter The recruiter/headhunter/search consultant (the terms are used interchangeably) is the person you will actually work with on your job search. You may be approached by a headhunter trying to recruit you to apply for a new job working for a firm she/he represents. Alternately, you may send your resume to a recruiter or apply for a position that a headhunter is trying to fill. Te mporary (Temp) Agency Temporary agencies are employment agencies that find employees to fill temporary jobs. For example, temps are often hired to work during seasonal increases in business or to cover vacations or illnesses. Manytemporary agencieshave expanded their role in the employment sector to filltemp to perm positionswhere the position starts out as a temporary job but could become permanent if the employer decides to hire the candidate. When to Use a Recruiter or Search Firm When does it make sense to use a search firm or recruiter to assist with your job search? If you seem to be stuck in a rut and you are not getting calls for interviews, it can make sense to use a recruiter to broaden your job search. It can also make sense if you are in ahigh-levelposition since those jobs are not always advertised, or in an industry that typically uses search firms to fill vacancies. Search firms have contacts in industries and at companies that you might not even be aware of. The y canhelp market your resumeand provide you with additional exposure to potential employers. Headhunters spend their working hours looking for employment opportunities. Thats time researching employers that you wont have to spend. Some employers are impressed by candidates who are represented by recruiters. In addition, you will have a professional representing your qualifications to the company. The headhunter can also help younegotiate a compensation package. Keep in mind that theres a difference between paying an employment agency to help you with your job search and using a recruiter to connect you with potential employers. I would not recommend paying for placement. Rather, you want to use a recruiter or search firm who is paid by your prospective employer. If you do need job search assistance, consider contacting the Career Services office at your alma mater if youre a college graduate or your local Department of Labor for free assistance. If you choose to work with multiple r ecruiters, its important to let each one know you are also working with someone else. Otherwise, they may both market your resume to the same employer, which can be an issue when the recruiter wants to collect the fee. Choosing a Headhunter How can you choose a headhunter who will work effectively for you? If you are seeking employment in a specific industry, consider using a headhunter who works in that industry. If you belong to a professional association, they may be able to provide a list of recruiters. Userecruiting online directoriesto generate a list of recruiters. TheRecruiters Onlinedatabase is searchable by over 150 specialties, as well as by location and keyword.i-Recruit.comhas a directory of recruiters listed by specialty and by location.Network with business colleaguesand acquaintances to get suggestions. Check LinkedIn to see if youre connected with a recruiter or someone who can refer you to one. Turn the table and spend some time interviewing the recruiter. This is an important professional relationship, and you need to be sure its going to work. Ask how long the recruiter has been with the company. Also, ask about the process and how they market your resume and present it to potential employers. Ask the recruiter for references and check them. Talk to clients about the services that were provided and what they thought of them. Also, ask if they would use the recruiter again. Finally, make sure you are comfortable with both the company and the individual. There needs to be a fit between your style and the style of the people who are representing you. Remember that using a recruiter should only be one step in your job search. There is no guarantee if, or when, a lead will turn into a job offer. So, do not stop your own job search efforts and dont stop networking or looking for potential opportunities on your own. Do let the recruiter know that you are seeking other opportunities.

3 Times You Shouldnt Speak Up at Work - The Muse
3 Times You Shouldnt Speak Up at Work - The Muse 3 Times You Shouldnt Speak Up at Work If a friend offends you or says something wrong, youâre probably quick to call them out for it. And if it got to a point where they were really starting to annoy you, you might even stop hanging out with them. At work, we donât have that luxury. We canât just call people out who do something that bothers us. So, how we respond to comments or actions that rub us the wrong way becomes a tad trickier. When should you speak up? And when should you let it slide? There are certain situations in which itâs definitely OK to interrupt to set the record straight, but other times, doing so ends up escalating the situation and putting other people on the defense. And you know that rarely ends well. To help guide you through those gray areas, here are three times itâs better to stay quiet in the moment (even when it feels unfair): 1. When Your Co-worker Presents Your Idea as Their Own in a Big Meeting While itâs obviously not cool for your colleague to take credit for your ideas, you canât exactly blurt out âMine!â in a meeting. Instead Your best bet? Approach them after the meeting in private- and approach them with the mindset that this wasnât on purpose. Now that doesnât mean you canât be direct; it just means you donât want to start the conversation by making them out to be the bad guy: âI heard you mention the new data strategy in our meeting. Iâm really excited for it and thatâs why I shared it with you yesterday. In the future, Iâd appreciate if you credited me in team meetings when youâre discussing ideas we spoke about.â Sometimes this approach leads to an apology or an explanation- one that makes you feel like itâs resolved. Other times it doesnât. If they try to defend themselves or pretend they did nothing wrong, you should make a mental note not to share your ideas with them in the future. Thatâs not the most ideal response, but it might be in your best interest if you think theyâre actively using your ideas to get ahead. 2. When Your Boss Calls You Out for a Mistake in Front of Everyone Part of being successful and getting ahead at work is learning how to own up to your mistakes and learn from them. But, this is easier said than done when your boss embarrasses you in front of your whole team by calling you out on a misstep. Your first instinct may be to defend yourself, but thatâs not always the best move. Why? This will automatically put your boss in a bad light, which will likely respond in him getting defensive and perhaps even doubling down. Instead Assuming you did in fact mess up, apologize in front of the group (even if you have privately to your manager already). Keep it short and professional- no need to go on and on or be too hard on yourself. Then, avoid this situation going forward by setting up a meeting with your boss and discussing how they can give you feedback in a more appropriate setting. It may look something like this: âAgain, I truly apologize for what happened, and would love to continue working with you to meet expectations. After you discussed [my mistake/where you feel Iâm lacking] in front of the team, my confidence in my work was a bit shaken. Would it be possible in the future to meet one-on-one to discuss those types of personal issues?â Often times, your manager will apologize to you and refrain from doing it again. After all, they didnât wake up with the goal of bursting your ego. But if they do? Read this article on how to deal with a boss you donât get along with. 3. When You Get Passed Over for a Promotion or Project and Your Less-Than-Favorite Co-worker Gets the Job There are few things worse than being turned down for something you really wanted and worked hard for, but knowing a colleague (and especially one youâre not fond of) landed it instead of you just plain sucks. And you might want to respond to the announcement with, âThatâs not fair- Iâve worked here longer!â But, as you know, saying that wonât exactly give off the leadership vibes youâre looking for. Instead First, put aside any personal feelings and send along a (sincere) congratulations- even if you donât like them, youâd expect the same respectful reaction if the roles were reversed. Then, donât be afraid to approach your boss about why you got passed over. It shouldnât be an âIâm better than himâ conversation, but rather an honest and candid one asking what youâd have to do or change to land a similar promotion. In addition, look to the promotee for pointers. Because, as Muse writer Lily Herman says about taking the high road when a colleague is more successful, âYou learn some of the tips and tricks that are pushing your colleague ahead- and you give this person a nice little ego boost thatâll probably make him or her like you more.â You may not be able to control how others treat you, but you can control how you react to them. And by being the bigger person, you prove youâre a professional who knows how to pick the fights that matter.

The Defense Departments Military Working Dog Program
The Defense Departments Military Working Dog Program The Defense Departments Military Working Dog Program By Donna Miles, American Forces Press Service LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, TX Army Col. David Rolfes military career has gone to the dogs. As director of the Defense Departments Military Working Dog Program based here, Rolfe and his staff are responsible for the health and welfare of some of the most unheralded members of the fighting force: its estimated 2,300 working dogs. These dogs, along with their handlers from every military service, are deployed worldwide to support the war on terror, helping to safeguard military bases and activities and to detect bombs and other explosives before they inflict harm. With an acute sense of smell five to 10 times stronger than a humans, working dogs can detect minute traces of explosives or drugs and alert their handlers of their presence, Rolfe explained. But at the same time, dogs have ability to inflict fear in an aggressor in a way a human - even if armed - often cant, and will defend their handlers to the end. People see a dog and dont want to mess with it, said Staff Sgt. Andrew Mier, a military working dog trainer who has deployed to Southwest Asia three times as a handler - twice to Saudi Arabia and once to Qatar. A dog creates a strong psychological deterrent. The vast majority of U.S. military working dogs are German and Dutch shepherds, and Belgian Malinois breeds Rolfe said are very aggressive, very smart, very loyal and very athletic. We expect so much of them that we need them to be strong and athletic, he said. We want a high-strung dog with aggressive tendencies because thats what the mission demands. Dogs have long been recognized as force multipliers by military fighting forces around the world, Rolfe said. The Romans put razor-sharp collars around their dogs, then sent them into the enemys ranks to bite and cut their foes. The U.S. military has used working dogs since the Revolutionary War, initially as pack animals, and later, for more advanced uses, such as killing rats in the trenches during World War I, he said. But World War II witnessed the biggest surge in use of working dogs to support military operations. The U.S. military deployed more than 10,000 specially trained canines, most as sentries, but others as scouts, messengers and mine detectors, Rolfe explained. Today, a couple hundred working dogs are serving with U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan as patrol dogs and explosives and drug detectors, Rolfe said, adding that contractors use additional dogs in the theater. Nearly 2,000 more working dogs provide similar services at U.S. bases and operating posts around the world. Meanwhile, the military is increasing its reliance on working dogs. Before Sept. 11, 2001, Rolfe said Air Force security forces trained about 200 working dogs a year for the Defense Department. That number is up to more than 500, with the vast majority of dogs being trained as sentries and bomb-sniffers. The 120-day program teaches the dogs basic obedience as well as more advanced skills, such as how to attack and how to sniff for specific substances. Rolfe said the initial training program, conducted by the 341st Training Squadron team, is based on positive rewards generally a ball or rubber toy rather than food. We learned long ago that food works only so long. What the dog really wants you to do is play with it. Once the dogs receive their initial training, members of the 37th Security Forces teach the dogs and their trainers to work as a team. One of the biggest challenges is getting a handler to recognize what a dog is showing him, said Air Force Staff Sgt. Sean Luloffs, an instructor at the school. But the big gratification is watching the teams improve and be able to perform at a higher level, and knowing that you had a part in it, added Mier. While the Air Force trains military working dogs and their handlers, Army veterinarians posted around the world help keep them fit for duty and treat their ailments. Telemedicine, so popular in the civilian health realm, is being used to provide expert consultation for military working dogs. We want them to stay in the field and be treated in the theater, said Army Maj. Kelly Mann, chief of radiology for the Military Working Dog Program at Lackland Air Force Base facility. In addition, Rolfe and his staff operate a fully equipped veterinary hospital at Lackland. As working dogs become increasingly important to the military mission, work is underway to help protect them from enemy threats. Rolfe oversees a research and development program thats looking at improved body armor and gas masks for military working dogs. No good method exists to protect a dog from a nuclear, biological or chemical attack, he said. But its definitely something being looked at, he added. Meanwhile, the Walter Reed Institute of Research is studying the use of pills that can help military working dogs survive a nerve-agent attack. Research is also underway to create an artificial nose capable of duplicating a dogs - but Rolfe predicts its a long way down the road. Some people say it could be 50 years before well have an artificial nose that can replace a dog, he said. Besides, dogs possess something Rolfe said a machine probably never will: immense loyalty and a desire to please. A machine doesnt care if it finds something, Rolfe said. But a dog wants to please its handler. A dog will go looking for something on its own where a machine wont. The bottom line, he said, is that dogs have a heart - something that makes them an invaluable asset to our fighting forces.

5 Ways to Get Your Boss Attention for Good Work - The Muse
5 Ways to Get Your Boss Attention for Good Work - The Muse 5 Ways to Get Your Boss Attention for Good Work Youâve been working really hard and the results are there. You beat your quarterly goals, landed that major client, wrote your best proposal yet, or stretched yourself to master a completely new part of your role. Then, you looked around for somebody to recognize what you accomplished- and nothing happened. The first time, itâs easy to chalk it up to a simple oversight. After all, you canât expect praise for each and every impressive thing you do. But what happens when you consistently work hard and you never even hear a âGood job?â Itâs not simply about missing out on praise (though, sure, we all want to be appreciated), you may worry that your manager doesnât see all youâre doing. Here are five possible culprits, along with solutions to get your boss to notice your work. 1. Your Boss Is Too Busy Is your supervisor constantly shuffling from meeting to meeting and taking one business trip after another? If so, your biggest issue may be that he or she doesnât have enough time to keep your work on her radar. Her schedule is simply too full to have a casual conversation- let alone a proper check-in meeting- with her staff. Thereâs good and bad news here. The good news is that your manager isnât purposefully shunning you. The bad news is that you only have select opportunities to get noticed. Solution Instead of waiting around for your manager to set a meeting, make an appointment with her- in fact, if you can, make it a weekly one. (If need be, go through her assistant.) Many people live and die by their daily agendas, so if you arenât on the schedule, then they canât afford to meet with you. However, if youâre on there, theyâll be happy to listen to you. (Once youâre there, use these tips to get your point across.) 2. Your Boss Plays Favorites Favoritism sucks. Youâve noticed that your supervisor has drinks with two or three of your co-workers- and also loves all of their ideas and suggests they take the lead on exciting new projects. And youâre on the outside looking in. Truth talk: Managers, like every other human, are pre-programmed toward having favorites. But while you canât change that theyâll naturally click with certain employees more than others, you can expect that youâll all be treated equally regardless. Solution Keep in mind that it may not be intentional. It could be that your manager connects better with a few people and naturally leans in their direction. (Or, yes, it could be that he blatantly prefers working with people who agree with him.) In an article about dealing with favoritism at work, career coach Elena Berezovsky says to ask for help. If you were feeling left out, you might be the one who then (unintentionally) shut out your manager. Thisâll reopen the lines of communication, and in turn, encourage your boss to pay more attention to you. 3. Your Boss Doesnât Understand You Weâre all unique in the ways we think, talk, and act. If you have different communications style (e.g., you prefer processing and replying over email and your manager likes spontaneous conversations), the result may be that your boss doesnât understand you- and you feel your work goes unnoticed. Solution Your first stepâs building stronger communication skills in general. Basics, like looking your manager in the eye when you speak, asking clear questions, and writing concise emails can improve your back-and-forth. Next, find ways to navigate differences. If your supervisor is an introvert and youâre an extrovert, then you should look for ways to reach her that are non-invasive (e.g., remember that introverts dislike the phone). If your supervisorâs easily stressed, then you donât want to use dramatic language. If you make these changes, then when you discuss your recent successes, theyâre more likely to respond positively. 4. Your Boss Wonât Forgive and Forget Have you made a mistake in the past? Maybe you missed a project deadline or failed to reach an important sales goal? While most people recognize mistakes and then move on, some managers hold grudges, which can make you feel like your work since then is being overlooked. Solution One of the best ways to make a convincing argument is to use facts. Yes, you missed a deadline two months ago- have you beat five since then? So you totally put your foot in your mouth with a client, but have you since smoothly moved to the next stage of the project with them? Donât let your mess up be an elephant in the room. Address it and then prove how youâve regrouped since. From there, segue to other successes youâve had recently. 5. Your Boss Is Over It What if you work for someone whoâs simply âover it?â You know, the kind of person who has a side project going, or is preparing to retire, or dislikes the company, or is clearly looking for a new job. Heâs no longer paying attention to his current role- or employees. Solution Your boss is looking ahead- and so should you. In this case, itâs less about getting their attention and more about making sure others know your value. Look for opportunities to collaborate and work across teams and concrete ways to show your impact. You want others to be able to vouch for you and to be able to show your value to whoever youâre reporting to next. A specific way you can start to do this is to offer to take work off your current managerâs plate. Ask him if there are ways you can step into (either an official or unofficial) mentorship role on your team. While you shouldnât work simply to get credit, being noticed plays a role in moving up the ladder. Naturally managers promote people who they know, trust, and believe do a great job. So, if you and your boss are on different pages, itâs worth putting in the time and effort to clarify just how much you do. Photo of people talking courtesy of Hero Images/Getty Images.

Social Skills in a Job Search and How to Build on Them
Social Skills in a Job Search and How to Build on Them Social Skills in a Job Search and How to Build on Them Upon the release of Clark Frey and Michael Osborneâs research The Future of Employment: How Susceptible Are Jobs to Computerization in 2013, automation anxiety was at an all-time high. This research estimates that âabout 47 percent of total U.S. employment is at riskâ of being computerized within the next two decades. As social skills are difficult to automate, their importance will continue to increase. Although the jury is still out on whether robots will actually start taking over our jobs, advances in artificial and deep-learning technology are exacerbating the concerns over the future of work. As technology continues to produce machines that complete increasingly complex tasks that were once safely reserved for humans, the question remains: what jobs will be left for us? Making Yourself Hard to Automate No need to panic, because recent research by NBRE suggests that as long as you have great social skills, then youâll likely avoid having your future opportunities taken away by artificial intelligence- mainly because social skills have been proven very difficult to automate. NBREâs research shows that employment and age growth have been particularly strong in occupations with high cognitive and social skills. It argues that these high-skilled, hard-to-automate jobs will increasingly demand social adeptness. Having social skills is clearly important if youâre looking for a position that will not be at risk of being automated in the future. So how exactly are we defining social skills and how can you build on them? Social skills are the skills we use to interact and communicate with our peers, both verbally and non-verbally. Below, letâs take a look at some basic social skills that your next employer may be looking for, and how you can build on them. 3 Social Skills in a Job Search and How to Build on Them Confidence in Communication The ability to confidently communicate and present information, whether in a small or large group setting, is a skill many employers value. Some people are naturally outgoing and able to present this confidence, but if you donât particularly feel you have this skill, try taking a speech or public speaking course. Youâll likely feel out of your comfort zone, but these classes can help you learn how to present your ideas confidently, regardless of the setting. Good Listener If you ask someone in sales why they are great at their job, theyâll likely tell you that theyâre good listeners. And thatâs because they have to tune into the prospectâs cues, both verbal and non-verbal, in order to truly understand what their needs are. Try this simple trick to see if youâre a good listener: the next time youâre in a conversation with your peers, count how many times you interrupt the conversation. Tips from a recruiter How to stand out at your next career fair
Tips from a recruiter How to stand out at your next career fair Tips from a recruiter How to stand out at your next career fair Make a splash at your next career fair with advice from Laddersâ recruiter.Itâs easy to feel like a small fish in a big pond when youâre at a career fair. With hundreds of candidates all vying for the attention of the same recruiters and employers, you feel like you donât stand out.And Iâm going to let you in on a secret: You probably donât. As a recruiter, I can easily talk to more than one hundred different job seekers at a career event. At the end of the day, the names, faces, and occupations all blur together. The most important thing you can do at a career fair is take steps to distinguish yourself from the crowd. After years of recruiting quality hires from these events, Iâm giving you the top ways to distinguish yourself from the other candidates. Theyâre surprisingly simple. Be confident and assertive. Please donât mosey up to my booth and wait for me to say something to you. Walk up to me and introduce yourself with a firm handshake. This will guarantee you about two minutes of my time, so make sure you have your elevator pitch ready to go. Tell me a little about yourself, what you do, and what youâre looking for in your next employer or position. Smile!I know youâre feeling the heat, but put your game face on, and make it clear that youâre happy to be talking to me and excited about your prospects. You probably like to work with people who are happy, and so do I. Grin, make a connection with me, and show interest in what my company does. Bring copies of your resume.Youâre at a career fair. This should be a no-brainer. And donât tell me youâve gone digital â" I will just think youâve gone lazy and didnât bother to find some nice paper to print your credentials on. If I have your resume, I can scan over your information (please keep the document short) and engage with you about your experience. If youâre right for the job, youâre also making it easier for me to talk you up to your potential boss. Send a thank-you note.It might sound crazy or old-fashioned, but a quick thank-you note goes a long way. Do this if you spent time at my booth and were genuinely excited about the company. Say it was great meeting me, and that you were the one with the red hair and goofy shirt, or the wacky tie. Remind me of who you were, say thanks, attach your resume, and ask to continue our conversation. I found three amazing candidates at the last career fair I attended for Ladders. This goes to show that career fairs are a great way to find your next job, as long as you make yourself stand out.Click on the following link for tips on what comes after the career fair: The interview.

Get a flu shot now for your benefit and your neighbors
Get a flu shot now â" for your benefit and your neighbors Get a flu shot now â" for your benefit and your neighbors If you do nothing else the next few days, get a flu shot. The best time to get a flu shot is by the end of October, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises. Considering the severity of last yearâs flu, it is especially important for everyone over age six months to be vaccinated. This includes pregnant women.Last yearâs flu killed 80,000 people, the CDC reported, making it the most lethal flu epidemic in decades. Also, about 710,000 people were hospitalized because of it.As of Oct. 6, 2018, 183 of those deaths were in children, the CDC reported. Additionally, there has already been one pediatric death this current flu season. And 80 percent of those children who died last year along with the recent pediatric death had not been vaccinated. You play an important role in stopping the spread of flu, not just to yourself but to others. As a doctor and public health professional who has treated many people with influenza, Iâll explain why.Protecting yourself, protecting o thersThe influenza vaccine has been shown to be one of the most important preventive measures against the flu. Though the effectiveness of the vaccine can vary â" and last yearâs rate was low, at about 40 percent â" this still meant that the flu vaccine reduced a personâs overall risk of having to seek medical care at a doctorâs office for flu illness by 40 percent. Considering the seriousness of the illness, however, you need all the protection you can get.And the vaccine reduces the severity and potential complications of your illness if you do get the flu. A large study published in 2017 of patients hospitalized during the 2013-2014 flu season found that vaccinated adults were 52 to 79 percent less likely to die than unvaccinated patients. Put another way, a hospitalized flu patient who was unvaccinated was two to five times more likely to die than someone who had been vaccinated.Almost everyone can receive the flu vaccine. Exceptions include babies younger than six month s and people who have serious reactions to the flu vaccine, like anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction. Some people get hives from eggs, but this is not considered a serious reaction. If you are one of these people, it is still OK for you to get a flu shot from standard providers. Even those who have a serious egg allergy can get the flu vaccine in a medical setting.Getting the vaccine is not just good for you but also for the larger community. About 70 percent of the population needs to receive the flu vaccine to ensure what we call âherd immunity .â That happens when a critical portion of a community is immunized against a contagious disease. When that occurs, most members of the community, including those who are not vaccinated, are protected against that disease because there is little opportunity for an outbreak. Even those who are not eligible for certain vaccines get some protection because the spread of contagious disease is contained. This can effectively stop the spread of disease in the community. You might even consider getting the vaccine to be a civic duty.Other things to knowWhile the vaccine has been shown to be one of the most important preventive measures against the flu, you can do other things, too. Wash your hands. If you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth or nose with your sleeve, not your hands. Avoid those who are ill. Stay home if you are sick.Antiviral medication can help you feel better if you contract the flu, but it must be started early in your illness, so call your health provider when symptoms beg in.A new, higher-dose vaccine is available for the elderly. If you are 65 or older, ask your doctor about this. About 54 to 70 percent of hospitalizations for flu occur among people 65 and older. No matter which formulation you receive, it is essential to be vaccinated. Donât miss the opportunity to do so.Remember that getting the vaccine will not give you the flu. That is because vaccines today are made with killed viruses. A killed virus cannot infect anybody. If you hear someone say they came down with symptoms after receiving the vaccine, it could be because they had been exposed to flu before they were vaccinated.Even if you canât get to your doctor or pharmacy by the end of October, you should still get the flu vaccine. While the best immunity is conferred if you get the vaccine earlier, you will be protected. And remember, even if itâs not a perfect match, it can protect you and your loved ones from getting a potentially life-threatening, yet preventable, disease.Good ad vice: Stay home if you have the flu. Better advice: Get the flu vaccine!Editorâs note: This is an updated version of an article that originally was published Oct. 23, 2016.Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert, Commissioner of Health and Hospitals of Rockland County, Fellows Ambassador New York Academy of Medicine, Adjunct Professor in the Institute of Public Health, New York Medical College, Certified Physician Executive, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Columbia University Medical CenterThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license.
